Oprah Winfrey leadership (part 2)

As this is my blog – I wish to re-state that everything I write about is my opinion.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Although I consider myself in the American political sense of the two words: “right and left” …
a conservative-ish libertarian, so more “right” than “left” …  I was excited for America when Obama was elected President.

America (desperately) needs a tough, inspiring leader who can get things done …
I thought Obama would step up and lead the country out of the mess.

Irrespective of all the bullshit being said — Obama is NOT a socialist (he’s not even close to being like the French)

But….

it’s unfortunate he hasn’t stood up and faught the political vultures circling above him who have successfully, coned themselves and many people in America into believing that he’s socialist — thus taking away his legitimacy to lead.   I guess, I should restate:  no one took the legitimacy away – he allowed it to be lost.

However — my disappointment in President Obama has nothing to do with his political agenda, and some of its failures or successes.

My disappointment has only do to with his Oprah Winfrey style of leadership.

In my opinion, too much time has been spent being a nice guy, trying to get everyone to like him.

… this world we live in today (esp. in america) everyone is trying to be accepted and liked by everyone else.

I wonder how many decisions are being made on issues based on the number of Facebook “like’s” something receives?

Are people being judged by their achievements, and quality of their character???
…or by the number of Twitter followers they have?

Several people reading this blog are in some way involved in a leadership position within their company, school, sports team or community – even if you’re not a leader, I assume you are aspiring to become one.

Look around you – or at the very least, reflect back in your life.

I bet …

the best leader/manager/mentor … i.e. the person who got the most out of you, the team, company, country, etc in your life was NOT the nicest guy in the playground.

A leader is not meant to be a friend.

A great leader doesn’t give a damn if people like him/her or not.

A leader needs to inspire, motivate and get people to do what they don’t want to do — and enjoy doing it.

What would happen if Obama skipped Oprah … and instead of  trying to come across being “warm and friendly” … challenged America to help him clean up the mess he inherited?

“Fireside chats” … or something like that

I’m sure President Obama is a really nice guy – but right now, the last thing America needs is a brother- like, best friend leading it.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

part 3 will be posted later tonight:

… discussing the idea that if your leader is not someone you would want standing next to you in a fist fight, then you need to find a new leader.

Excellent commentary. Your vc is amazing. This is my first visit. I look forward to keeping up.

  2. Spot on analysis. Apparently there is a need for many people in the states to take poly sci 101 over, and really pay attention to the comparative governments section to understand the definition of socialism (and fascism and communism, etc).

Greetings from an old high school mate, Mark Pappas. Looks like you are changing the world in more ways than one. Interesting blogs with inspiration for me personally.

Hope our paths cross again some day.
